Understanding Your Earnings From Your Business

Know the Difference Between What You Want to Earn and What you Need to Earn

One of the biggest challenges for small business owners is separating business goals from personal needs. But the two are closely linked. After all, your business exists (in part) to support the life you want to live.

Start With Your Personal Budget

Before looking at sales targets or profit margins, you need a clear picture of what your household requires:

  • Essentials – mortgage/rent, utilities, food, transport.
  • Minimum payments – loans, credit cards, or other commitments.
  • Fixed costs – such as childcare, insurance, or council tax.

This gives you a baseline figure: the absolute minimum your business must provide. It also shines a light on unnecessary spending, like unused subscriptions or non-essentials that can easily be trimmed.

From there, you can build upwards:

  • How much disposable income do you want?
  • What luxuries matter to you — holidays, hobbies, dining out?
  • How much do you want to put aside for savings, pensions, investments, or debt overpayments?

This exercise turns vague “earn more” goals into specific, achievable numbers. Contact Us for a template sheet for your personal budget.

Reverse Engineering Your Business Income

Once you know your personal figures, we can work backwards:

  • What “take-home” do you need?
  • What gross amount must your business generate (after tax) to achieve that?
  • What’s the most tax-efficient way to extract it — salary, dividends, pension contributions, or a combination?
  • What about the earnings you ‘want’ – this can often be different to what you need.

This ensures your business works for you, not the other way around. You can get clarity on the tax implications of your personal goals.

Building the Business Plan Around You

With your personal goals mapped, the next step is aligning them with your business strategy:

  • Calculating break-even points.
  • Understanding profit margins.
  • Setting KPIs and sales targets that directly support your lifestyle.

This approach provides financial clarity and confidence, while creating a foundation for growth. Instead of chasing turnover blindly, you’ll know exactly what you need and how to get there.
